Best Vegetables to Grow in Pots

A patio, balcony, or front step can become a productive vegetable garden. The key is choosing crops that suit the size of your containers and giving them enough sun.

Reliable choices for containers

Leaf lettuce, herbs, radishes, compact tomatoes, peppers, bush beans, and green onions all grow well in pots. Pick a container with drainage holes and use quality potting mix rather than soil from the yard.

Match the pot to the plant

Small greens can share a wide, shallow planter. Tomatoes and peppers need a larger pot, usually at least five gallons. Larger containers hold moisture longer and make watering less stressful in summer.

Place pots where they receive the right amount of sun, then check moisture regularly. Containers dry faster than garden beds, especially on warm or windy days.
