How Often Should You Water Vegetable Plants?

The best watering schedule is not a fixed number of days. It depends on sun, temperature, wind, container size, and the stage of growth. Your plants will do better when you check the soil instead of the calendar.

Use the finger test

Push a finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry at that depth, water slowly until moisture reaches the root zone. If it is still damp, check again tomorrow.

Water the soil, not the leaves

Aim at the base of the plant early in the day. This gives foliage time to dry and helps reduce disease pressure. Deep, occasional watering encourages roots to grow downward and makes plants more resilient.

New seedlings need closer attention. Established plants in the ground often need less frequent watering than plants growing in containers.
