Your first season
Start your vegetable garden in five simple steps.
Start with the place you have, not the garden you imagine someday. A sunny patio, a few containers, or a small patch of soil is enough.
1. Watch the light
Vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, beans, and cucumbers generally need at least six hours of direct sunlight. Lettuce and herbs can tolerate a little less.
2. Pick a small growing space
Choose either a small bed or two to four containers with drainage holes. Containers are an excellent first choice because they are easy to control and place.
3. Start with easy vegetables
Try lettuce, basil, radishes, bush beans, cherry tomatoes, or peppers. Choose things you like to cook.
4. Water by checking the soil
Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Give plants a thorough drink, then let the soil drain.
5. Keep notes
Take photos and write down what you planted. Your own garden will quickly become your best teacher.
