How to Start a Vegetable Garden for Beginners
Starting a vegetable garden is much easier when you make the first season small. Choose a spot with six hours of sunlight, begin with a few vegetables you enjoy eating, and give yourself room to learn. A small bed or several large containers can produce a surprising amount of food.
Start with the conditions you have
Before buying seeds, observe your space for a day. Notice where direct sunlight lands and how long it stays. Then choose a simple growing area with good drainage. Fill containers with potting mix, or enrich a garden bed with compost.
Choose forgiving first crops
Lettuce, basil, bush beans, radishes, cherry tomatoes, and peppers are all approachable choices. Plant only a few varieties. It is better to care for five plants well than to feel overwhelmed by twenty.
Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry, and check plants often. The goal of your first garden is not perfection. It is learning what grows well in your own space.
